Microblading vs. Powder Brows

Pros & Myths

In this month’s blog post I wanted to talk about Microblading versus Stardust Brows/ Powderbrows. If you haven’t heard of Powderbrows or Stardust brows, it is a popular alternative European beauty trend to Microblading and in many cases, a preferred method to Microblading. Here are some basics:

Microblading

Best for: Anyone who wants a natural look that lasts and wants to save time when applying makeup.

What is Microblading? Microblading is a permanent makeup technique using a super-fine pen (a bundle of 12 to 15 needles) to deposit pigment into eyebrow skin like a tattoo. The tip is so fine, in fact, that it can create hair strokes which mimic your natural eyebrow hair. Think of each stroke as a little paper-cut and yes, it hurts a little bit depending on your pain threshold. However, the eyebrow artist can numb the area first to lessen any potential pain. Many women of Asian or South Asian ethnicities prefer Microblading because it shows up beautifully on their skin texture. Regarding younger clients, as soon as skin has enough collagen, they can do this procedure and this can be determined in the consultation. Clients with oily skin and over 60 years of age should consider alternative techniques.

How long does Microblading last? This method can last anywhere from 6 to 12 months. For some clients, it has lasted beyond 1 year. You will need a touch-up in about a month.

Powder/Stardust Brows

Best for: Clients with combination or oily skin.

What is powder/stardust brows? This technique is a powder fill-in technique of permanent makeup, much like shading. It can typically last longer than Microblading or the 3D hair stroke style and is a preferred method for anyone with oily skin. Additionally, Powder Brows is also better for mature skin because that type of skin has less collagen and becomes thinner with age. Therefore, it is not as traumatic to the skin as Microblading can be. The needle which is used fills powder in the brows using very small dots of pigment and has a very defined shading shape. It is important to note it does not look “blocky” or heavy when done correctly. If you are looking for a longer-term eyebrow tattoo, the powder fill brows might be a better eyebrow option for you. Stardust/Powder/Ombre is perfect for any skin type and any age range, it is also a preferred method for clients with oily skin. Before you decide on a procedure, I would urge you to consult with myself or your aesthetician first.

How long does it last? You will need a touch-up in about a month after your first initial session. After that, this method can last anywhere from 12 to 24 months. For some clients, shading has lasted beyond three years.
